Kuluma (2022)

A four-dimensional exhibition about time and space

Space is the three-dimensional extent in which all physical objects have a relative position. Up until the 20th century it was assumed that three-dimensional space and one-dimensional time were separate phenomena, until Albert Einstein’s work on the theory of relativity began to establish the notion that time and space were related components of four-dimensional spacetime: In the same way that the third dimension can be understood as an endless series of two-dimensional planes, the fourth dimension—time—can be understood as an infinite series of three-dimensional spaces.

The inspiration for the Kuluma exhibition was to create a series of installations that emphasised this continuum of infinite spaces and the human experience of the flow of time. The exhibition comprised three interactive works: some where the spectator changed the nature of the installation simply by stepping into its space, and some where we wanted the visitors to experience ephemeral moments that were unique to them.

Kuluma was held at the Pispala Contemporary Art Center in Tampere, FI, from September 25th to October 16th, 2022.

Hetken taajuus (The Frequency of a Moment)

In Hetken taajuus, one is momentarily positioned on the wavelengths of a ray of light wandering through infinity. The piece was inspired by the visible spectrum of a light beam traveling at great speed, and consisted of a darkened space with a hanging sculpture and an interactive soundscape being controlled by the webcam feed of the space. When the spectator was near the long-waved red end of the sculpture, the soundscape focused on lower frequencies, and as the spectator moved closer to the short-waved blue end, the focus in the soundscape shifted to higher frequencies.

Ajan rihmat (Threads of Time)

The piece explores the spectator’s relationship to motion through visual and haptic sensory experiences. The space is filled with various light materials hanging from the ceiling, among which the spectator is free to move around, while a gentle airflow sways these hanging threads. The soundscape of the piece consists of sounds produced by the materials used in the installation, arranged into four layers of varying length that come together to form an ever-changing kaleidoscope of sound.
